A recent NetApp blog explored four operating principles to reinvent and modernise an IT department. Today IT is competing against a customer-centric world of unlimited external technology options and in addition to this there has been an explosive growth in data, decreasing budgets and increasing demands. It seems IT faces insurmountable challenges to stay relevant, so it must evolve and modernise to survive.


Cloud, social, mobile and information are converging to challenge classic IT operating models. For example, social media has become a communications platform and users are using the power of the cloud to go to market faster – all without IT. IT must change the mind-set that business will come to it first for technology and demonstrate a new IT mind-set that offers a combination of tech expertise, honest perspective and an understanding of business. The four operating principles for IT reinvention according to NetApp’s blog includes:


  1. Lead with customer
  2. Lead with architecture
  3. Lead with innovation
  4. Lead with people


To stay relevant, IT needs to reinvent itself to keep its head above water in a market where external IT alternatives are increasingly attractive. In new IT, IT businesses will need to foster strong relationships with business customers so that IT is the first stop for technology solutions. This is in addition to having the right people, with the right skills to understand the enterprise’s business in-depth, in order to differentiate it with its customers.
